We are casting a ten-minute film about a mother and her 10-year-old daughter as they deal with loss. This is a beautifully written, poignant drama with touches of humour, to be directed by Roger Nelson, who has more than 15 years of experience in the French film industry. The intention is to produce a moving film that will gather recognition in festivals around the world. The screenplay is available on request.

There are two roles:

—Brenda, 40s, a mother for all seasons in good times, and a little less as we meet her. She struggles to be gracious as things fall apart, keeping her focus on what’s important in life.

—Pearl, 10 going on 500, her wise daughter who is rapidly losing her sight. It could be that Pearl no longer wishes to see a world where her father isn’t present.

The gentle banter and flashes of humour between Brenda and Pearl lead us to a moving climax where the truth about the missing father must be expressed and denial brought to an end.

Casting will take place in Sydney late September, early October. Shooting in Sydney soon after.

This film is self-funded for the time being, but hope springs eternal for limited funding in the near future. Over three days of shooting, the food at least will be awesome.

Have a read and you will see this is the film to be in.

Please contact Roger Nelson for further information and thanks.

November 2 – 4
Tues, Wed,...

Screen Acting Intensive for Actors

November 2 – 4

Tues, Wed, Thurs, evenings 6.30pm – 9.30pm

You asked and we delivered! – A longer more intense version in the film studio!

Our last course with Ian was an unmitigated success comments ranged from:

’Ian was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and fantastic to work with – my recommendation is make the course longer’

’Absolutely fantastic! I got so much out of this course … wish we could do it every day!’

Convened by highly experienced director Ian Watson this course is designed for emerging and professional actors seeking to move from stage to screen. Screen acting requires differing techniques and knowledge, many of the physical and vocal tools of the actor need to be modified and reinterpreted for the screen. Technical and physical limitations become critical.

Join Ian and other actors for three nights in the film studio to gain invaluable experience in delivering exceptional performances for screen.

Areas covered will include preparation and spontaneity, relaxation between takes, techniques and tools. Participants will learn, rehearse and act in filmed scenes and the results critiqued and perfected. Ian’s invaluable advice will also include interpreting director’s instructions and giving appropriate and exceptional screen performances.

5 Days

August 13 – 22

Acting is acting, in any medium - but there are important differences. This 5-day practical course, over two weekends, aims to equip the actor with the essential principles and techniques of screen acting.
The course will explore -
+ The inner life of the character and its external expression. Character analysis, details, multifaceted characterisation, the camera as thought-reader.
+ being or representing? Is it a choice?
+ Big and little acting? Wrong approach!
+ Surprising, dangerous, unpredictable acting - or generalised, safe and domestic?
+ Focus, relaxation, presence, communion - playing for the other actor, rather than for the camera.
And the more obvious differences -
+ Inadequate rehearsal - more the rule than the exception. Saving yourself!
+ Categories of screen directors - talkers, watchers, worriers, insecure, over-confident, auteurs, the writer/director, the actor/director. Most directors are technical experts, many including experienced professionals know very little about acting.
+ Maintaining your concentration among the distractions and delays of the shoot. Shot after shot, take after take.
+ The importance of physical and emotional continuity. The schedule - shooting out of order.
+ The basics of screen language.
+ The Crew - and more.

About George Whaley

George Whaley is a director, actor, writer and teacher for stage and screen. His screen credits include the mini-series The Harp In The South, Poor Man’s Orange (screenplay adaptation and direction), he directed Clowning Around and Clowning Around 2 in Perth and Paris and most recently wrote and directed the feature film Dad and Dave - On Our Selection. Formerly Head of the Acting course at NIDA, he has also been Head of Directing at AFTRS.
