Be Prepared – Acting for the Screen

5 Days

August 13 – 22

Acting is acting, in any medium - but there are important differences. This 5-day practical course, over two weekends, aims to equip the actor with the essential principles and techniques of screen acting.
The course will explore -
+ The inner life of the character and its external expression. Character analysis, details, multifaceted characterisation, the camera as thought-reader.
+ being or representing? Is it a choice?
+ Big and little acting? Wrong approach!
+ Surprising, dangerous, unpredictable acting - or generalised, safe and domestic?
+ Focus, relaxation, presence, communion - playing for the other actor, rather than for the camera.
And the more obvious differences -
+ Inadequate rehearsal - more the rule than the exception. Saving yourself!
+ Categories of screen directors - talkers, watchers, worriers, insecure, over-confident, auteurs, the writer/director, the actor/director. Most directors are technical experts, many including experienced professionals know very little about acting.
+ Maintaining your concentration among the distractions and delays of the shoot. Shot after shot, take after take.
+ The importance of physical and emotional continuity. The schedule - shooting out of order.
+ The basics of screen language.
+ The Crew - and more.
