Tom McSweeney and David Newman launch casting business

Tom McSweeney and David Newman launch casting business

[Wed 04/04/2012 05:58:11]

By Brendan Swift

Respected casting directors Tom McSweeney and David Newman have combined forces to launch their own company, McSweeney Newman Casting.

Newman, previously with Christine King Casting, counts many Australian and locally-produced projects among his credits including HBO series The Pacific, which required more than 3000 auditions, and went on to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Casting for a Mini Series, Movie or Special. His other casting credits include Red DogA Few Best MenNarnia: Voyage of the Dawn TreaderX-Men Origins: WolverineDon’t Be Afraid of the Dark and upcoming features Mental100 Bloody Acres and Forbidden Ground.

McSweeney, who moved from the US to Australia in 1998, has cast over 200 feature films, mini-series and telemovie projects and over 500 hours of episodic television. His credits include upcoming TV series Reef Doctors, as well as Nightmares & Dreamscapes,Salem’s LotThe Great RaidScooby DooAquamarine and Ghost Ship. He has also received four ARTIOS Award nominations from the Casting Society of America and an Emmy nomination for his work on US mini-series The Starter Wife.

“Founded on the mission to foster talent and provide a creative environment where actors can work freely and not be hounded by the pressures of ‘having to get the gig’, we believe that true talent can come from anywhere, and that is what drives us to unearth the diamonds in the rough - to look beyond the obvious and to see in actors the potential that they themselves may not even see” McSweeney and Newman said in a statement.

“Over the past decade, the talent emerging from Australia has been truly exceptional, as proven by the fact that there are currently so many top rating US or UK film and TV projects with Australian artists in prominent, if not leading roles. From our perspective, it’s the sense of freedom, daring and commitment to the craft while maintaining their sense of humour, affability and cheeky larrikin charm which explains why the international market is responding in the way they have.”

McSweeney Newman Casting will have offices in Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

CASTING - THE McNEIL PROJECT

PRODUCTION DETAILS

Production:  THE McNEIL PROJECT

Production company: ‘Wattle we do next’ productions in association with ‘Stable’ productions

Location:  fortyfivedownstairs, 45 Flinders lane, Melbourne

Producers:  Cain Thompson & Luke McKenzie

Rehearsal Dates: 11th June – 30th June

Show Dates:  6th July – 29th July

Artist fees:  Profit share

Director:  Malcolm Robertson

Production synopsis: The McNeil Project presents two of Jim McNeil’s best-known plays penned in Parramatta prison over 30 years ago: THE CHOCOLATE FROG and THE OLD FAMILIAR JUICE.

Funny, moving and ever provocative, McNeils award-winning plays put a spotlight on a world acknowledged, but rarely revealed, and highlights the hypocrisy between ‘them’ and ‘us’.

In THE CHOCOLATE FROG, two hardened inmates put their new cell mate on trial and as the verdict approaches, the trial serves as witty commentary on the dynamic between morality and mateship within Australia’s penal system.

Then, exploring sexuality, ownership and hierarchy, three inmates sneakily concoct a boozy brew that acts as a catalyst, unlocking dormant primal urges in McNeil’s widely regarded masterpiece, THE OLD FAMILIAR JUICE.

The McNeil Project is a highly entertaining and humanistic double bill - a commemoration to McNeil’s legacy.

AUDITION DETAILS

Audition dates: Wed 28th March

Location:  45 Flinders lane Melbourne

Contact:  Cain Thompson – 0403 598 950

Script available on request

Roles Available:

Kevin - Male 18 to 24.  Kevin is smart and principled and University educated. In jail for a short stretch due to a drunken fight, he is a fish out of water in jail. Kevin has an innocence about him, yet an inner strength that challenges the two older and domineering criminals he shares a cell with.

Dadda -  Male 40 to 60. Dadda doesn’t necessarily need to be old but has to be weathered.  Dadda would have been strong and hard in his former years but now had become venerable and slightly deluded. Essentially a wino vagrant Vietnam vet. Has a good heart, but lacks the strength to back up his convictions anymore.  Must be a Strong actor.
